AFFORDABLE CARE ACT
Before the former US president Barrack Obama’s entry into office in 2008, a significant
number of Americans, based on the results of a series of opinion surveys, were aware of the
inherent problems with the then-existing health care system of the US. Thus, after a series of
debates among the key stakeholders of the US health care system, the implementation of the
Affordable Care Act took place. The primary goals of the ACA, which later translated to its
advantages, included improving the security of coverage for people with chronic illnesses,
constraining the rising cost of health care, and expanding health insurance coverage for those who
lacked it. Since its implementation, ACA has made health insurance available to many Americans
who could not acquire health insurance in the private marketplace (Barr, 2016, p.15). It has also
extended health insurance to millions of uninsured adults, especially those with low income based
on the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) scale. The disadvantage of the ACA, however, is witnessed in
increased government spending on health care.
The implementation of the ACA policy followed a continuum of debates and discussions
within all levels of government. The series of surveys revealed that many Americans were aware
of the need for reforms but were divided on what the reforms would entail. This aspect led to
further divisions between Democrats and Republicans. The Democrats advocated for the
expansion of the then-existing health care system. The Republicans, on the other hand, opposed
the replacement of the health care system that existed at the time and suggested that they build on
its strengths (Barr, 2016, p.14). The proposal of the Republicans received substantial support from
the health insurance industry. Neither members of the two parties were willing to compromise
their approaches to the health care reforms issue. These differences are still apparent a decade after
the implementation of ACA, with many questioning its effectiveness, given the constant rise in
government spending on health care.
