Family Therapy Compare and Contrast
Introduction
People often work with therapists to solve problems either as individuals or in a
group. Family therapy is the approach of psychotherapy, where the solution to the issues
emanates from family counseling. There is the recognition of the fact that there may be a
problem in one of the family members affecting all others. Therefore, since the effect is on
others, there is the need to involve them when it comes to formulating a solution. Family
therapy brings parents, children, and family members for improved communications and
resolutions of any existing problems. This happens through the identification of the different
family patterns and addressing these issues that may be causing an unhealthy psychological
life for the family. Nichols (2014) acknowledges that family therapy aims at changing the
structure of the family. There is the belief that the dominant forces are external to the
family. Therefore, if there were the alteration of the family’s organization through therapy,
then it would be easy to transform the life of each household member and eventually
provide a continuous and lasting solution to the existing problems. Subsequently, family
therapy enhances the structure and dynamics of the family. This paper examines sand
highlights two of the family therapy models illustrated under the classical school of family
therapy.
Bowen Family Systems Therapy
Dr. Murray Bowen created the Bowen family systems theory after seeing the varying
effects of trauma on soldiers during the World War. The theory views the family as an emotional
unit and the individual as part of a more extensive system as is within the confines of systems
thinking (Brown, n.d). The application of systems thinking for this theory means that members
