MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS
BY
(INSERT NAME HERE)
Abraham Harold Maslow, an American Psychologist, proposed one psychological framework
theorizing that each individual’s needs is layered according to degree of importance and urgency.
In his paper, A Theory of Human Motivation, Maslow discussed his observations regarding stages
of growth and human curiosity.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is used to study what motivates humans into becoming happy. His
theory classified five different needs that people in general must satisfy in order to achieve
happiness: (1) physiological needs such as food, water and shelter, (2) safety needs such as security
and safety, (3) belonging and love with friends and family, (4) esteem needs such as prestige and
feeling of accomplishment, (5) self-actualization or achieving one’s full potential. Physiological
needs have the highest importance and should be fulfilled first before moving on to the next stage.
In healthcare set-up, nurses are taught to apply this theory when making patient care plan. More
often, nurses are faced with overwhelming patient requests which are impossible to attend to at
once. Hence, this framework helps nurses to make critical decisions which patient with what need
to prioritize.
