Elimination Complexities and Functional Patterns
The patients and families that have been diagnosed with a specific disease feel the extent
of the elimination complexities. All aspects of the life of a patient’s life and their families are
affected especially if the patient is undergoing a complex treatment that takes a long time to cure.
Some of these elimination complexities effects include financial effects where families struggle
to pay for health insurance, psychological effects, social effects, and helplessness since they lack
control and disruption of their normal day-to-day operations.
Financial effect is one of the major effects as the cost of caring for the patient is at most
times very high especially if it is a chronic condition. Financial assistance is highly needed as
they are needs of covering costs such as hiring a caretaker for the patient, general treatment from
the hospital and purchasing of medicine, and transport to healthcare facilities. Other effects such
as lack of control include anger, frustration, and loss may vary from one patient to another. The
patient and their families are affected socially as they feel they are so different from other people
which results in depression and stress, and may result in stigmatization ("Healthcare System
Complexities, Impediments, and Failures", n.d.).
The nurses play an important role in helping the patients by empathizing with their
circumstances. The nurses help the patients by making them cope, understand, and accept their
current condition and give them hope to help them stay positive during their hearing. For
example, a person may have a stroke and get bedridden for more than 6 months. During this
time, the patient can experience a lot of psychological problems. At this point, they need the
nurses to support them emotionally and to present options for coping such as encouraging the
patients to undergo rehabilitation. The nurses also explain the condition of the patient to the
