SUSTAINABLE HEALTH SYSTEM 2
According to Fineberg (2012), the three attributes of a healthcare system that is
sustainable are adaptability, acceptability, and affordability. A number of recommendations
are also offered to ensure optimal functioning, sustainability, and efficiency. For instance,
there is a need to reform the healthcare system so as to increase access to healthcare services
and to ensure that health insurance is affordable. Different courses of action must be explored
for transforming the already complex healthcare system into a more streamlined one.
Efficiency can also be enhanced by employing technology in healthcare, such as through the
development of a nationwide infrastructure for healthcare information. The use of technology
in healthcare settings will also lead to effective and efficient care. Other recommendations
offered by Fineberg (2012) are as follows:
i) Efforts should be doubled to guarantee the safety and quality of care.
ii) The most costly healthcare needs of patients should be met in humane ways.
iii) The preferences of patients should be honored and respected at all times.
iv) Operations research and systems engineering should be relied on to ensure the
smooth transition of patients in a healthcare system.
v) New ethos for medical professionalism should be championed for to increase
autonomy and accountability.
vi) Promote inter-professional education and support team-based care.
Accountable care organizations are also recommended to enable health professionals
can work together in managing regimens, information, and payment options so as to facilitate
efficient and less expensive care. Clinical practices can also be improved by using evidence-
based practices. Policies can also be developed to ensure that insurance premiums for patients
are reduced and made affordable. Fineberg (2012) suggests that these changes should be
implements on a national level and not on a state level.
