Clinical Case
Patient’s Pathology
The 38 years old male is not a fulltime athlete. This means that he is not involved in
vigorous activities daily. Therefore, his body cannot be said to be flexible. Athletes are used to
running most of their time and usually develop a high level of endurance. Thus, their bodies are
flexible in that they can withstand abrupt bending and stretch without any difficulty. Unless they
come into contact with an unexpected colossal force, they are unlikely to sustain an injury. From
the X-ray Photos, it is clear that the 38-year old patient had suffered Anterior Cruciate Ligament
(ACL) tear.
The report indicates that the patient sustained the injury during a recreational basketball
game. He tried to make a move similar to those that are usually done by professional players.
However, his body is not used to sudden movements. Thus, he sustained a severe injury on one
of his knees. He twisted unexpectedly, which severely affected his right knee joint. After the
incident, he tried to ignore the little pain he was feeling and continued to play. However, he
could not finish the game. The pain increased with time to a level that he could not walk
properly. He was substituted midway, and when he examined the affected area, it had swelled.
He was not able to walk, a situation that forced him to seek urgent medical care. When he visited
a treatment center, it was found that he needed surgery to rectify the condition. The anterior
cruciate ligament had ruptured, and, thus, required an operation to reconstruct it.
How the Pathology Contributed to Symptoms and Treatment
The purpose of ACL is to provide rotational support to the upper part of the body. As the
patient was playing basketball, he rotated inwards, thus placing strong forces against the ACL,
which exceeded its capacity. As a result, the ligament ruptured. The phenomenon is painful such

that a patient is incapable of moving normally. If appropriately treated, it heals after several

. However, the patient is required to rest and follow all the guidelines provided by the
physician. An ACL rupture is characterized by swelling around the affected and intense pain

.
The 38-year old patient was experiencing these symptoms. Therefore, it is right to say that he
had torn his right knee ligament. In this case, he needed surgery to reconstruct the ligament. A
clear look at the X-rays photos shows that the operation was effective in placing the various
tissues in their regular positions. However, the patient needs to avoid subjected the knee to a
significant external force to enhance healing.
Participating in sports is one of the most common causes of an ACL tear. The patient
developed the condition after twisting his knee while playing basketball. He was unable to finish
the game due to intense pain and swelling at his right knee. The good thing is that he sought
treatment immediately after the incident happened. This helped to a great extent as the process of
rehabilitation started before it was too late. Thus, if he follows all the laid down guidelines, he
will recover within the stipulated time. The cause of the ACL rupture was considered during the
treatment. As such, the doctor would have certainly advised him to refrain from participating in
activities that involve a lot of body movements. Pathology comes in handy during such cases.
The cause of the condition must be taken into consideration during diagnosis and treatment. Such
a move reduces the patient's recovery period as it raises the effectiveness of the treatment
process.
