Open and Close-Ended Questions 2
Open and Close-Ended Questions
Questions are used to measure versatile social variables within a society. They are used to
measure facts, characteristics, opinions, and knowledge on various issues within society. The
types of questions used in research can either be open-ended or close-ended. Open-ended
questions do not have explicit responses and are used for exploration of a topic where little
information/knowledge about it is known. For example, when interviewing participants
regarding a community program, questions that are based on the opinions of participants can be
used. Responses obtained from open-ended questions can be used in the formulation of close-
ended questions that can be used to test the efficacy of such a community program. Open-ended
questions can also be used to collect detailed information on a topic under research as it can
illuminate possible flaws in other questions. Open-ended questions generate a great wealth of
information that can be informative in a research project. However, information obtained from
open-ended questions can be difficult to analyze and organize and this is why most researchers
do not use these kinds of questions. Participants may also feel overwhelmed to give long answers
and this can affect their response (Bachman and Scutt, 2020).
On the other end, closed-ended questions allow explicit responses to questions asked. For
example, participants can be asked their level of satisfaction with a certain community project or
activity. Close-ended questions can be analyzed by statistical and computational methods with
ease. Participants provided with close-ended questions have a high likelihood to answer the
questions that they are provided with. The questions do not have ambiguity because they provide
options that participants can choose from. Close-ended questions can be disadvantageous in the
collection of research data by obscuring the thoughts of the participants unless they are well
designed to cater to all possible outcomes. This would be difficult because there are maybe many
