THE ROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT 2
Introduction
The modern U.S. governments have had several significant successes from 1900 to the
present. Light (2002) outlines some of the top government achievements as follows. Firstly,
the government's greatest achievement was the rebuilding of Europe after the Second World
War (Light, 2002). The government of the United States came up with the Marshall Plan, also
referred to as the European Recovery Program (Light, 2002). The program was a European
economic reconstruction that attracted participation from a committee of sixteen multinational
representatives. The Congress of the United States gave the formation of the program the green
light. Consequently, President Harry Truman signed the program into law on 13th April 1948

through the 26th Amendment. Consequently, the expansion of the right to vote increased the
levels of democracy. Thus, today, more citizens take part in the voting exercise as a way of

The third achievement was the promotion of equal access to public accommodations.
This campaign became crucial in the 1960s. In particular, the public schools had to offer equal
