SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES 2
Supporting Individuals with Disabilities
For people with disabilities, support and assistance are necessary for them to
participate in society. Lack of support services means individuals with disabilities would
overly depend on their families, thus preventing them and family members from becoming
active in society. Despite the increasing need to support persons with disabilities, most
countries are yet to make support services a core component of disability policies, thus the
persistence of the service gap. The primary challenge in supporting individuals with
disabilities is the inexistence of a single model that would work in all categories of
individuals with disabilities. It requires a diversity of models and providers to derive the best
supporting services to individuals with disabilities. This paper discusses the provision of
assistive technologies and 504 plan to aid the lives of individuals with disabilities in the
current competitive environment.
Assistive technology is the first support for people with disabilities. Assistive
technologies are the equipment used for helping individuals with disabilities engage in life
activities. Assistive technologies are a crucial component for supporting individuals with
disabilities to ensure that they can function like other people (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, 2019). The essential role of assistive technologies is evident in enhancing
functional independence and easing the daily living tasks using aids that help disabled
individuals participate in social activities, communicate, travel, and participate in recreational
activities (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019). Assistive technologies can
range from small devices to big ones. Some of the examples of assistive technologies are
magnifying glasses, walkers, wheelchairs, and scooters that aid the mobility of persons with
disabilities. One of the bigger technologies is special computers that help individuals with
disabilities communicate.
