Susan Cain’s Ted Talk began as she discussed how people often overlook the talents and
capabilities of introverts in favor of extroverts. She tells the audience how she felt like she had to
change her introverted energy and channel it into extroversion because it was reverted to as a
norm. This was reflected on how she pursued being a lawyer who would primarily need to exert
herself instead of becoming a writer, which was her passion. She mentions how even the school
system favors extroverts as so many tasks are assigned to be done in groups instead of
individually. However, she mentions that being either an extrovert or an introvert is both fine,
but what is important is that these people work together. Extroverts may be particularly good at
public speaking and performing, and introverts would be best at writing and deep thinking. This
is why the two will be good collaborators. This is how I feel as well. I do not understand why the
two are often pitted against each other when they should always be working towards the same
goal. For example, extroverts will perform better when in a group, and introverts will perform
better when working alone. Workplaces should be able to respect which working style is better
for an individual as this can also increase productivity in the workplace. After working in their
own styles, they can then come together, discuss, and carefully weigh the pros and cons of a
project with their varying viewpoints. Productivity can also be increased if channels of
communication can be adjusted depending on the type of person. This quarantine for example,
extroverts may prefer having all meetings through video call, but this might not ring through for
introverts. They might be more comfortable discussing things online then having video calls just
once a week for check up or updates. Catering to people might need a bit more work, but will
pay off because of the increased productivity and overall work satisfaction. However, like what
Susan Cain mentioned in her talk, people often think that introverts are unfit for leadership
