INTRODUCTION
The goal of any sport is to win. This goes the same for professional leagues that pay
professional superstars millions of dollars each season. This generates an interesting question on
whether a team that pays its professional players more get to win more or not. This will be the
focus of this paper. This paper investigates the most famous basketball league in the world the
NBA. Teams with the highest salaries and teams with the lowest salaries are compared.
Particularly, the average number of wins of these two groups are compared and analyzed whether
salary really makes a difference in the win rate.
METHODOLOGY
Definitions
The variables involved in the data set are (1) team, (2) total salary, (3) number of wins. The
first variable team or team name is simply the name of the NBA team. The total salary ($) is the
total salary of all the players in the team during the 2019 2020 season. Lastly, the number of
wins is the accumulated wins of the team during the 2019 2020 regular season.
Data Collection/Sampling Procedure
The salaries of the teams and their number of wins were obtained from available open
sources on statistics involving the National Basketball Association. The salaries of the teams were
obtained from http://www.basketballinsiders.com/nba-team-salaries-at-a-glance/ and the
number of wins were obtained from https://www.nba.com/standings”. Two groups of teams were
then selected. The first group involves the top ten with the highest total salaries and the second
group is a collection of the bottom ten teams in terms of the number of wins.

Summary of Data
From the raw data, the top ten and bottom ten in terms salaries were obtained together with
the corresponding number of wins for the 2019 2020 season. The data is summarized in tables 1
and table 2.
