Middle adulthood can be defined as the period in an individual's lifespan that occurs
between ages 40 and 65, which is between young adulthood and old age. Initially, psychologists
treated adulthood as a single development stage where few distinctions occur between
adolescence and death. However, present-day psychologists discovered that emotional,
cognitive, and physical responses tend to develop throughout an individual’s lifespan as our
social desires and needs changing over time (Ford & Ford, 2016). These findings make it crucial
for counselors to consider all development aspects of an individual, including cognitive and
physical health.
I would inform Brenda that in middle adulthood, a person is likely to experience good
cognitive and physical health with negligible, yet normal, declines in certain areas. When it
comes to the physical aspect, the aging process becomes more apparent in middle adulthood. For
instance, the eyesight tends to get impaired and most people may require various forms of
corrective lenses to address the issue. Studies also show that 14% of middle-aged adults tend to
develop hearing problems (Ford & Ford, 2016). The skin of the adult also dries out and becomes
more prone to wrinkling, especially in sensitive facial areas. Blood vessels and age spots start
being more apparent as the skin grows thinner. There is also a significant change in the muscle-
to-fat ratio as fat accumulates in the stomach area.
Despite the common assumption that there is a significant cognitive decline linked to
aging, studies show that the cognitive function does not decrease with an increase in age (Ford &
