Identifying With a Film or Book Character
I identify with one of the main characters in the film "The Shape of Water," Elisa Esposito.
Elisa is a mute cleaning lady in a facility and is considered a low-class individual, which is proven
by the apartment's condition (Richardson, 2018). For someone like Elisa, with the inability to
express herself fully, she cannot influence most of her decisions and mostly watches people do
whatever they like.
Elisa Esposito has several traits that personify me; one of the traits is friendly. Even with
her inability to share most of her thoughts or opinions since she cannot talk, it is seen that she can
be a perfect friend in the way she engages with one of her colleagues. When Elisa meets the
amphibious creature brought into the facility, she immediately connects with it, and both become
close friends. This trait personifies me because I have made many friends, mainly because I am
constantly engaging in conversations with individuals that I have never met who want to know and
understand their views on different issues. Secondly, Elisa is a caring woman and goes to the extent
of risking her own life to save the life of the amphibious creature when she discovers that there are
plans to vivisect the creature (Richardson, 2018). Elisa's actions show that she is ready to protect
the environment, including all its creatures. These caring and protective traits personify me as I
spend most of my free time looking after the environment, engaging in group activities of cleaning
the streets, and ensuring that pets and other creatures are safe and given everything they need to
survive. I have adopted several orphan puppies which would have otherwise been endangered to
the extent of being killed.
Additionally, Elisa is optimistic about life and sees the best out of the worst situations.
Elisa does not care what others say about the amphibious creature, whether it is dangerous or not;
she sees the creature as beautiful and believes it cannot harm anyone (Richardson, 2018). This trait
