ARTIST COMPARISON GOLDSWORTHY AND TURRELL 2
Artist comparison Goldsworthy and Turrell
Andy Goldsworthy and James Turrell signify that art is a transformational practice that
draws inspiration indirectly and directly from both ancient and modern and Western and Eastern
forms of spirituality. For Goldsworthy, Celtic mythology informs his art while for Turrell, Hopi
myth ritual and Quakerism shape his vision.
Andy Goldsworthy: Earthworks
A photographer and sculptor, Goldsworthy claims to work with and in nature. Instead of
creating monumental constructions out of or on the land, he operates almost telepathically with
nature. He rearranges natural forms in ways that enhance instead of diminishing their beauty. His
poetic site-specific arts are made from organic or ephemeral materials - icicles perched on rocks
or dandelion flowers in a ring. He then documents his artworks through beautiful color
photographs. Goldsworthy perceives death and decay in his works as part of life - taking an
environmentalist's outlook.
Goldsworthy gets inspiration from all angles of the natural environment, including
snowflakes, icicles, twigs, rocks, and reeds, tree roots. He often claims that is aim is to
understand the natural world by becoming part of it. Also, he considers his artworks as
ephemeral or transient since they, just like any other part of the natural world, will change as
time goes by. In almost all his works, Goldsworthy uses found materials to create art. He focuses
on using exclusively natural materials and has proven that by using his saliva to keep pieces of
ice together when making ice sculptures. Due to the impermanent nature of his art, Goldsworthy
always photographs his sculptures after completing them. Photographing his art is the only way
to record his works.
James Turrell: Spirituality and Light
