Art History
I consider art effective when it is aesthetically pleasing, represents the style of art used at
a particular time, and it represents the culture of the people. I believe aesthetically pleasing art
must have an excellent choice of color. What attracts me to a piece of art is the use of color. The
color should relate to the art piece. For example, if it is a painting of a crow, I do not expect the
color choice being red. I find it appealing when the artist uses the color realistic to what he or she
represents. Hence, black color is what applies in a painting of a crow. The second criterion is the
art piece must represent the style of art from a specific era. For instance, I do not expect abstract
expressionism as an art style to apply to art painting of the medieval era. The art piece must
associate with the time it is creation takes place. The third criterion is when art teaches me about
the culture of the people it represents. From looking at an art piece, I should learn about the
people the art piece represents. I should learn about their beliefs and culture. For instance, if I
look at a statue from the early civilization of Rome, I would learn about their mode of dressing.
Therefore, through the use of the three criteria, I will analyze Viking Art Oseberg's burial and

it as effective art. The creature used is not appealing. I have no way to know if the choice of
color is how the creature looks in real life. The choice of color is grayish brown. The color does
not attract me to the art piece. However, looking at the Trajan's Column, I find it effective since
it shows me the whitish color of the statue that was used during the time of the sculpture. The
vivid use of white attracts me to the art piece since it stands out. Also, I see the texture of
Trajan's Column is finer in detail, unlike Viking Art Oseberg burial. I cannot say what the
Viking Art Oseberg burial creature represents by looking at it. Hence, from what I know, I
