TRANSCULTURAL PERSPECTIVES IN THE NURSING CARE IN ADULTS 2
1. Discuss how culture influences adult development
Culture influences individuals and families and the decisions they make in terms of
health problems caregiving and health/illness transitions. The transition to adulthood is a time
when individuals go through physical and psychosocial changes happen. The physical or
physiologic changes are easy to identify as hormonal changes take place in both men and women
(Zhang, 2018). The psychosocial changes, also known as the development of personality, is more
difficult to observe but just as significant. The cultural values and practices of individuals
influence both psychosocial and physiologic development as they take place throughout a
person’s lifetime.
The impact of culture on physiologic development in adults can be seen in how people
from different cultures act when they undergo menopause. In women, the functions of the
ovaries decrease as they get older, causing their levels of progesterone and estrogen to also
reduce. As these physiologic changes take place, the self-image and self-concept that these
women have started to change as well (Zhang, 2018). Culture influences are relevant in this
aspect of adulthood because women learn how to react to menopause and its symptoms through
their cultures and families.
How menopause is perceived and how women view and deal with the symptoms that
come with menopause seem to vary across cultures. When it comes to psychosocial
development, culture affects the changes that occur in the lives of people who live within it,
especially during adulthood. Traditionally, Western culture viewed adulthood as the plateau
stage that separated adulthood from old age and major decisions were made in the late teens.
Drastic changes did not frequently occur after this stage (Zhang, 2018). These cultural beliefs
