Every action taken can be viewed from the perspectives of either being ethical or
unethical. There exist a relationship between ethics and business. The moral compass of an
individual influences the decision taken to manage a business. Similarly, the actions of two
companies (Walmart and Costco) can be subject to ethical scrutiny. In recent developments, the
two companies have taken several measures to eliminate middlemen, distributors, and
wholesalers. Arguably, the decisions have adversely affected small traders surviving on the
middlemen channel. Although the companies are entitled to take such actions, the question is
whether such actions can be termed as being uncalled for.
In my reactions, the decision of Walmart constitutes wrong behavior. The decision of
Walmart to cancel the contract with Dean Foods can be termed as being uninformed. For several
years, daily farmers have been distributing milk to Dean Foods, thus making ends meet. Milk is a
product that requires little processing before it becomes ready for consumption. Walmart has
been seeking to be competitive by lowering the costs of their products. One of the means that can
be applied to reduce the costs entails eliminating the middlemen. However, the costs that stand to
be saved are negligible. As the company operates its milk plant, it will use some resources,
including manpower and supplements cows. By watching the video featuring the Curtis family,
their lives stand to be jeopardized since the source of the livelihoods for the past decades is at
stakes (NBC News, 2018). If Walmart seeks the welfare of the general public, it should seek to
reconstruct the agreements and ensure dairy farmers are not affected much by the changes.
Similarly, Costco's actions have led to the elimination of various suppliers by
constructing its system that carries out the role of feeding the chickens, slaughtering, and
transporting. The company has recruited about 100 to 125 Iowa and Nebraska farmers to grow
birds (Guebert, 2019). The two companies have managed to structure their supply chain from
