COMMUNITY POLICING AND ADMINISTRATION 2
Community Policing and Police Administration
Traditional policing involves the police reacting to problems. Community policing
focuses on building a relationship with community members. It is built on the idea that specific
officers police a specific area, interacting with the public to develop community partnerships that
aid in resolving recurrent issues (Swanson et al., 2012). How the public interacts with the police
significantly impacts the methods used. Community policing relies on public participation to
both identify and solve issues within the community. Community policing is about controlling
and preventing crime, which means linking otherwise solitary events with each other to see the
bigger picture (Swanson et al., 2012). These issues may be prioritized according to community
needs and preferences, a process for which community members can be more productive if they
take part in training modules.
However, taking steps to integrate crime invention with currently available technology
within a law enforcement agency is challenging (Bureau of Justice Assistance, 2013). The public
sector is important in this regard. Public influence plays a role in aspects of community policing,
particularly when it comes to acquiring resources. Unfortunately, limited models of community
policing partake in no relationship with municipal services (Swanson et al., 2012). In community
policing, individual members are the direct focus. Municipal services are groups separate from
that of the police, and they tend to believe that programs within the police department are solely
the police’s problem when it comes to finances (Swanson et al., 2012). However, some cities
take a different approach. They believe that policing is the city’s problem, resulting in city-wide
management systems that allow for greater access to service requests as well as funding
(Swanson et al., 2012). When municipal agencies are held accountable, even more can be
achieved than already can be done with the help of individual community members.
