Introduction
Today, the prevalence and the cost of sexual harassment, a sign of discrimination based
on gender or sex, has been a growing gender-based issue at the national and global level.
According to Minson (2016), sexual harassment is based on gender violence that intimidates,
humiliates, as well as affects the dignity of another person. It includes physical contacts, sexual
comments, advances, and jokes with sexual content, among other related behaviors. Also, it
affects all races, gender as well as age. The Sex Discrimination Act outlines the circumstances
and the unlawful nature of sexual harassment (Kennedy, 2017). Also, it is unlawful for an
individual to be victimized for proposing or making complaints about sex-based harassment to
the Employment Equal Opportunity Commission (EEOC). This paper examines the historical
context, the nature, and the possible solutions for sexual harassment at the workplace.
Historical Context
The term sexual harassment was used during the 1970s to raise cognizance. A lawyer
named Lin Farley attempted to get the notion of harassment as a form of gender discrimination.
The legal landscape is one in which individuals made various claims during the period.
Previously, in the 1960s, the main way in which individuals talked about discrimination was
rooted in the Civil Rights Movement (Eskridge Jr, 2017). This connected too much to the idea of
females and the ability to work. Most of the story came out of the workshops and the work
performed in the Liberal period, mainly through house chores. Often, this was performed by
Black locals, which Jim Crow regarded as sexual harassment. Therefore, people like Rosa Parks,
trying to push claims against females for sexual harassment and rape in the workplace.
