KEHLANI 2
Introduction
Kehlani is an American musician who identifies as queer and pansexual. This for Kehlani
means that she loves men, women, intersex, transgender, non-binary as well as queer people and
pansexual people too. She is not limited to societal constructs of sexuality or how to love and
who to love. Borrowing from Rupp (1999) who suggests that, “sexuality is not a fixed essence,
understood and practiced in the same way across history and around the globe” Kehlani, argues
that love is love and it lies in very gender that there is.
Rupp avoids using terms such as gay, lesbian and homosexual to describe individuals and
instead uses the terms ‘same-sex love’ and ‘sexuality’ to define a wide array of emotions and
actions of people living in a time when those categories had not yet been named and claimed.
Even now, the LGBTQ continuously grows to accommodate many people and offers a wide
spectrum of identities. In current times, it has become important for everyone to find their own
identity or create one they prefer, and hence terms such as homosexuality continuously lose
meaning while new terms come up as well as new meanings to old terms. Kehlani argues that she
is queer and not bisexual and identifies as a pansexual as she is a lover of people across the
spectrum. She further argues that she identifies as queer and not gay because she felt that gay
always insisted there was still a line drawn as to which 'label' of human she was attracted when
she just loved everybody. In doing so she further rejects societal constructs of labels and the
roles labels play in defining what our lives should be.
The meaning of words and cultural beliefs go hand in hand such that the word woman
comes with descriptions such as mistress and girlfriend, a female servant or domestic help while
the description of man does not have gender roles assigned to it. In the modern day, Kehlani has
found herself on the receiving end from members of the LGBTQ community for being pregnant.
