Case One
In the case of Admiral Thomas Westfall, the relevant fact is that Admiral wanted to
achieve community good, where he decided to fire three workers. In this case, the ethical issue is
whether Admiral Thomas Westfall acted ethically when he fired civilian storeroom clerk with
thirty years’ service making him lose both the job and accrued pension. Primary stakeholders are
two career petty officers, civilian storeroom clerk, and Admiral Thomas Westfall.
In this case, we have several possible alternatives. The feasible positive options include:
Reducing the rank of petty officers (1), pointing other penalties according to the system (2), and
lastly, verbal or written reprimand (3). The ethics of these alternatives is that some of the
disciplinary actions that lead to the ethical question. For instance, in the case, it is wrong for an
employee to lose 30 years job together with a pension.
Practical limitations in the case of Admiral Thomas Westfall, he couldn’t act softly
because he needed to take any action that will bring to end ongoing theft. It served as a lesson to
others with similar intentions and behavior. However, Admiral could have warned the employees
or give them a punishment like suspension.
