Introduction to Cross-Cultural Psychology
Culture itself plays an important part in one’s life and therefore, clearly in the field of
psychology. Through culture, one can define him or herself better, is able to differ from one to
another, and is able to survive. Culture allows one to express him or herself in various ways
such as through the use of language, appearance, and behavior. Without the existence of culture,
human nature would have to rely completely on one’s instinct so that it could function properly
and be able to remain alive. Culture is everywhere, at all times, and is a manmade product of
one’s environment. How significant culture is and how much it is influenced by others,
including oneself, will be illustrated in this paper. The author of this paper will delimitate
cultural and cross-cultural psychology while examining the kind of relationship that exists
between cultural and cross-cultural psychology. In addition, the role of critical thinking in cross-
cultural psychology will be addressed and the scientific method involved with cross-cultural
research will be defined.
Definition of Cultural and Cross-Cultural Psychology
There are many definitions of what culture stands for, but most individuals agree that
culture is something learned, passed down from generation to generation, and a strong influence
in molding his or her behavior. Culture is a variable product of one’s environment. It is an
existing element in one’s environment sculpted by oneself and many others. Culture either
shapes one or is influenced and is what makes one human. It segregates one from most species
and provides the ability of not only applying instinct but also cultural knowledge to existence
and therefore, survival. Culture helps define oneself from others and at the same time, it assists
one to operate with another. Because psychology is the study of human behavior and
performance, it is vital that the cultural and cross-cultural aspects are considered when trying to
