Police Budget Planning
Introduction
Police department budgets are among the crucial expenditures that constitute the city or a town’s general
fund budget. The chief of police, being the police department manager, is responsible for the planning,
operation, and administration. In the capacity of a CEO, the chief of police plans, directs, and coordinates
the enforcement of an area's ordinances, the state’s law, and fulfilling the mandate of protecting people
and property while also maintaining peace and order (Lira et al. 4).
The organization of my department would assume the following order:
Chief of Police, Deputy Chief, Patrol Service Commander, Commander of Internal
Investigations/Internal Affairs, Patrol Officers, Traffic Officers, Detectives, Public
Service Officers, and school resource officers.
In a financial crisis, proper budgeting becomes a top priority. Police services are often visible in local public
functions; hence when initiating the budgeting process.
I will take the matter to the public and involve the local community leaders since they have a voice
in the budgetary process (Rice 2).
The intended budget is program-oriented hence needs to align with the primary goal of community
policing.
The approximate annual budget is $1,400,000. This amount will be shared among the various
departments, including the patrol service, public service, and administration department. My
department- Merton Working Together -will be concerned with community policing
The budget breakdown is as follows:
The department will be allotted 560 000 (40%) of the total annual budget while the others allotted
420000 (30%) each.

The higher allocation is because community policing deals with many social issues such as crimes,
drug control, and domestic issues such as violence, among other issues.
Programs that will be given prominence include:
Crime Prevention Program,
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE),
Female Self-Defense Program, and Community Police Academy.
Why these programs are important.
They help preserve public safety
They improve the quality of life among the community members.
The selection or elimination of the programs will depend on the urgency and importance.
More urgent and important programs will be selected first. The strategies to make up for the lost
revenue include defunding other programs such as individual overtime, seeking funding from the
local treasury, and minimizing cost.
Conclusion
Police budgeting will involve thorough consideration of the available fund and the
departments that deal with more pressing and immediate issues. Such departments as
Merton Working Together will need more funding.
Human relations theory will guide the process. It will create a social environment
in the department which would boost employee participation, production and
satisfaction.
