Chapter 1-Subject Review Questions
1. Everyone has worked for an inadequate manager. Given your readings thus far in the
text, describe the causes and the consequences of your experience of the manager’s
ineffectiveness from a management standpoint.
2. Describe, in as much detail as possible, how the Internet and globalization has affected
your daily life.
The internet has affected every aspect of my life. I have the ability to shop for
everything my household needs from the comfort of my own home. It allows me to do
the research on a product without the need to go into a store and speak to an expert. It
provides me first-hand knowledge from other consumers to help steer me toward the
correct purchase. When I was in the market to purchase a new vehicle, I was torn
between two models, rather than having to rely on a test drive and a pushy salesman
alone, I was able to go to multiple websites and research every aspect of the vehicle.
The availability of information due to the internet makes everything in daily life more
efficient. Globalization is evident in my daily life with the availability of international
products. I drive a Volkswagen and own items that are assembled outside of the United
States. This gives me the opportunity to get a quality product for a better price as well
as provides me with the opportunity to use products that are better for the
environment.
3. Name an organization that is not effective. In your opinion, what can management do to
improve it?
In my opinion Cox Communications is not an effective organization. One of the major
downfalls is the lack of education of their employees. It is extremely frustrating as a
customer to call and ask a question, unsure of the validity of the answer. I have
personally called to get a question answered about my bill to receive the answer, lose
the connection to my representative and upon calling back with the same question be
told something completely different. The lack of customer service from some of the
representatives is also frustrating as a customer. The managers can develop a better
employee training that includes some of the frequently asked questions with updated
answers. Managers can provide weekly updates via email as well as facilitating more
opportunities for the employees to come together and share their experiences that
week, somewhat of a debriefing if you will. As far as the lack of customer service, there
should be more training on how to communicate with others in high stress situations.
Understanding the expectations of customers by seeing it from their perspective can
help with the customer service aspect as well.

4. Describe your use of the four management functions in the management of your daily
life.
In my job as a contract specialist and system administrator, I am constantly planning out
strategies for achieving goals. When assigned with taskers from high headquarters, it is
my job to set the deadline that is conducive to all 7 team leads completing it while also
allowing enough time for me to complete the compilation of all the information prior to
submission. This is sometime challenging and requires a great deal of organizing on my
part. I, as the system administrator, have to ensure the information presented to my
team leads is specific and directions are clear to alleviate any possibility for
misunderstanding of the task at hand. In my role as a contract specialist, it is my job to
organize all the necessary pieces of my construction projects to ensure all aspects are
covered; this includes scheduling site visits with multiple different offices, organizing
and tracking all necessary documents and ensuring work is completed according to the
schedule submitted. Contracting requires coordination of multiple moving pieces, to
include the customer, civil engineering, the contractor and leadership. One of the
biggest pieces of my job is communication, it is crucial that I accurately convey the
needs of all parties clearly and to help motivate them to work toward the ultimate goal
of contract completion. I have to establish meaningful connections to build the trust
needed for me to effectively do my job. Even though I don’t hold an official leadership
role in my office, the need for me to motivate customers, peers, contractors and
leadership to contribute their ideas to reach a common goal is vital. In contracting there
is a daily need to stay involved with the parties who contribute to your contracts to
ensure everything taking place is beneficial and moving toward the end goal of a
finished project.
Chapter 2-Subject Review Questions
1. What do you feel are the most important forces in the microenvironment facing
companies today?
I feel the most important factors in the microenvironment facing companies today are
the public and most importantly, their competitors. In today’s market there are small
businesses trying to compete with huge companies, such as Amazon and Zappos. The
small business is at a disadvantage in most cases where commercial items are being
purchased simply because they must charge more due to supply and demand; whereas
companies like Amazon and Zappos are a vast marketplace for a multitude of items.
They are capable of holding a higher quantity of a specific product because they are
selling so many other things to offset the cost of inventory elsewhere. In a market
where technology plays such a huge part, there is always the unknown of what their
competitors are doing to win over consumers. I believe customers are another
important force in the microenvironment. Customers have the ability to drive the
market in some ways, they are provided the opportunity to shop around and find the
best deals through the use of technology. In order for companies to combat this, they
