Adlerian Theory, Lifestyle, and Motivation
Define Lifestyle from IP perspective
From an individual psychology perspective, lifestyle is each person’s different way of
thinking, feeling, and seeing life. This definition shows how Adler views personality
development. Lifestyle is a stage in each individual’s life: birth, growth, achieve maturity,
suffers loss, succeed and fail, and die. In the stages of lifestyle, we as humans are both the
receiver and the creator of our world. Children have their curiosities and viewpoints of the
world. During this stage, children were to watch how other individuals think, feel, and act
throughout their life (Mosak and Maniacci, 1999).
For example, a mother drops a cup of coffee on her legs and yells a swear word, “damn.”
The child uses the word “damn,” and his mother puts him in the corner. The mother sends an
unclear message to the children not to swear. This story shows how individuals are affected by
their perceptions and learning. Also, our lifestyle is a set of rules that guide our way of thinking,
feeling, and seeing the world. Lifestyle is not just about the stages of life; there are rules that we
learn from internally and externally. As humans, we receive information and data from our
environment and our bodies. When receiving that data, lifestyle is the main key to using that
information. Behaviors, interests, values, attitudes, interactions, and other factors define our way
of life. Lifestyle in psychology gives us the opportunity to understand ourselves, learn from our
mistakes, and have personal growth (Mosak and Maniacci, 1999).
