Unit 4 Lesson 1: The Imperialist Vision Apply 2
Henry Prosser

Imagine that you are living in the United States in the 1890s. Write a letter to the president persuading
him to support or oppose an imperialist policy. This letter should be at least 400 words in length.
Dear President Cleveland,
I am writing to urge you to support American Imperialism. I feel that this was have long reaching
benefits for our country. It will benefit the morale of the citizens, increase relations with other
countries, and will have benefits for the citizens in the United States.
Americans will have more exposure to foreign countries. This means that the citizens will be
exposed to new cultures and ideas. As we saw with Japan, a country that isolates itself falls behind. The
Japanese were so impressed with our ships, weaponry, and technology. I feel that a similar fate could
befall us if we do not stay progressive. Another benefit will be that our military will expand. To defend
our people worldwide, we will need military bases. This is beneficial because it will put the U.S. in a
better position should it ever come under attack.
Other major benefits of imperialism will be felt on U.S. soil. Because of more contact with other
countries, more trade will be established. This means the citizens will have more ways to procure
products and materials. This can lower the prices of items. It also will increase business opportunities as
people will be able to set up new businesses with countries that were previously inaccessible. I also
strongly urge you to allow Hawaii to be annexed. The people of Hawaii are suffering a major economic
depression and I fear for their wellbeing if we do not accept them. The current Queen has already been
overthrown and the economic situation is not improving. We are doing them a disservice by rejecting
them. We already enjoy the sugar provided from there. By having Hawaii, we would have opportunities
to have a permeant place in the Pacific Ocean which was previously void for the U.S.
Finally, morale will rise from allowing imperialism. The American people have an adventurous
soul. Pioneers and explorers are the hallmarks of our people. We have explored and conquered the
continental U.S. To allow this spirit to continue to thrive, our citizens must be allowed to spread their
wings throughout the world. The citizens of the U.S. are some of the best in the world and other
countries can only benefit from learning from us. We will also be able to help spread Christianity.
President Cleveland, I hope I have changed your mind about imperialism. I truly believe that the
benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Our people need more trade and opportunities and the world
needs the American culture.
Sincerely,
Henry Prosser
