Course Assignment 4
Name __Lauren Allison___
Thinking Critically About Civil Liberties
The American Civil Liberties Union (www.aclu.org) is one of the country's
oldest and most active groups working to protect civil liberties. Visit its
website and select a "Key Issue", such as Internet privacy, rights of
individuals accused of a crime, immigration, religion, reproductive freedom,
or flag burning. Read the arguments for protecting these rights and then
respond to the following questions.
1. What is the argument from the ACLU for protecting these rights?
The key issue I chose was Religious Liberty. The argument being protected is
there are two corresponding protections for religion. The ALCU states that
they are the right to religious belief and the government not preferring
either religion or non-religion.
2. Can you think of a reason(s) that these rights should not be
protected? What groups might make these arguments?
These rights should not be protected when it comes to prayer in a school
classroom or gathering. Christians might make these arguments. Maybe
they do not want to force prayer, but if the students don’t mind it then it
should not be a problem.
3. Do you agree or disagree with the ACLU's position on the issue? Why?
I believe these rights should be protected. If the First Amendment explains
that Americans have freedom of religion, then Americans should be able to
have the right to choose what they what to do with their beliefs.
