Option #1 Hazard Mitigation

When it comes to disasters either man made or natural the preparedness of a community

will determine the impact, recovery, and help to return the community back to normalcy. In 2012

the number four spot on the costliest storms to hit the United States of America (CNN, 2013). A

storm of this magnitude required months of cleanup and the cooperation of many different state

and federal entities alongside the individual affected communities. In the wake of such disasters

there has been a lot of different thought into the recovery, prevention, and how to minimize the

impact of sch natural disasters. Mitigation in a broad sense is any activity designed to reduce a

hazard to a person place or thing. This is an important step when a disaster strikes, having any

sort of preparedness is essential to the recovery process. This has been proven as we have

evolved as a society and globally have recovered from hundreds of disasters both man-made as

well as natural. While it would be impossible to prepare for any and all types of disasters an any

given time. Mitigation is a great method to prepare multiple disaster types and minimize the

impact of any future disasters. There have been many different practices put into place to

mitigate disasters over the years, some of them have even become law. The Disaster Mitigation

Act of 2000 (DMA), was put into place to guarantee federal funds to be dispersed in the event of

a disaster (Islam, Ryan, 2018). One of the major steeps in the mitigation process is to create a

hazard mitigation plan. This is the process of organizing and gathering resources, assessing all

possible risks, developing a plan to mitigate any protentional disasters, and in event of disaster

the ability to implement and monitor the plan. When utilized this method can potentially

minimize the impact and decrease the recovery time of any potential disasters.
