We’ve all heard at some point in our lives the phrase “it depends” (and in my case, I think I’ve
used it more in my Comm 105 class than in any other scenario throughout my whole life), but have
we really taken the time to actually analyze what this expression actually means? According to the
book Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication by Ronald B. Adler, Lawrence B.
Rosenfeld and Russell F. Proctor II “A variety of factors influence how we select, organize,
interpret, and negotiate data about others” (P. 110); In other words, there are certain factors that
influence the way in which we perceive others.
In an attempt to learn in a deeper way the meaning of perception, and also the different
factors that affect the way in which I make/take first judgments/impressions, I decided to conduct
and experiment in which I evaluated the person I felt more closure to than anybody else in the
world: myself. I decided to evaluate myself using a diagram in which I categorized myself with
terms like ‘shy’ and ‘lonely’ from least descriptive to most descriptive, using a total of 16 terms.
After I finished evaluating myself, I asked for two different vantage points; The first one being an
acquaintance from school, and the second one being my boyfriend. It was very important to take
two opposite perspectives for this experiment for the most accurate answers; since these two
persons do not know each other, don’t speak the same language, and most importantly, interact
with me in two completely different environments.
What I marked as the most descriptive term for me is ‘I am emotional, and surprisingly
my acquaintance and boyfriend both coincided as the most descriptive term for me is ‘I am
confident.’ Referring back to the text, several factors cause us to notice some messages while
ignoring others (Coon, 2009). With Amylee, my college acquaintance, we frequented mostly on
