Summary
National Institute of Mental Health Perspective: According to this institution, ADHD
is a real mental disorder that requires special consideration and treatment. This condition is
usually rampant among preschool and early school children. Children with this condition portray
challenges in concentrating on a single task for a long time. In other words, children with the
condition tend to be hyperactive, impulsive, and inattentive. Therefore, it becomes relatively
hard for the teachers and the parents to control their behaviors since they become hyperactive.
This condition is real since psychologists diagnose a child with it if the symptoms persist for
more than 6 months. Also, impulsiveness and hyperactivity symptoms exceed inattentiveness
with time in a child with this disorder. Although children without this condition might portray
symptoms that are associated with ADHD (hyperactive, impulsive, and inattentive), their levels
tend to be low compared to that of children with this condition. Besides, the psychologists use
differential diagnosis during the evaluation process to rule out that the client is not suffering
from any other condition. Children with this disorder cannot perform their duties well without
the support of their teachers, parents, and counselors. Consequently, most of them portray poor
academic performance compared to their peers in school. Also, children with this condition are
not able to relate well with their peers both at home and school. Furthermore, the institute claim
that ADHD is a real disorder since the symptoms that are portrayed by people with the condition
