Remember: Editing takes time!
This should be completed over the course of several days.
When you edit your paper it is in your BEST INTEREST to read, re-read AND even have someone else re-read it aloud to you so that you can make
sure your writing “makes sense” and “sounds right”.
Revising and Editing (ARMS and CUPS)
When editing did you REVISE (ARMS) and EDIT (CUPS)? Check under EDITING in your notebook if you forgot the
details of these terms. SEE BELOW for SPECIFIC DETAILS!
Arms Add sentences or words to make sure each sentence makes sense.
aRms Remove unneeded words and sentences. You want the strongest possible word choice. Make every word
count.
arMs Move sentences around and re-arrange words to make sure that you have the correct sentence structure and
paragraph structure.
armS - Substitute words (or sentences) for stronger word choice (or more powerful sentences).
Cups - Capitalize first letter in every sentence, specific names, specific names of places, months of the year, word “I”
AND first letter of every major word in title
cUps Usage: Make sure nouns and verbs are written correctly so they make sense.
cuPs - Use punctuation marks correctly: periods, question marks, exclamation points, commas, quotation marks,
semi colons and colons.
cupS Check your spelling. When using a word processor (typically) if there is a red squiggly line under your word
that means it is spelled incorrectly. Please check it in a dictionary or use spell check.
