Equipment Assignment - Cheerleading
Section 1 For everyday practice, not much protective equipment is needed but there are
important pieces. Starting from the ground up, proper footwear is essential. Properly fitting
footwear helps to protect the feet from external forces and shear forces inside the shoe. A shoe
with optimal grip on the bottom will provide the traction needed for stunting and tumbling.
Next is clothing. For all positions but especially fliers, minimal or tight-fitting clothing is best.
Loose clothing such as t-shirts has the potential for fingers or hands to get caught during stunts.
To minimize this, clothing should be skin tight. Bases may want to wrap their wrists with
athletic tape before each practice to provide extra support during stunting. During games and
competitions, a second pair of shoes would be recommended as they would not be worn from
hours and hours of practice. Wrist wrapping would also be used during games and competitions
as normal.
Section 2 During all practices, an athletic trainer should be on call in case of an emergency. It
is the head coach’s responsibility to make sure that an athletic trainer is available during
practices. General first aid supplies such as splints and bandages should be on hand for cuts and
fractures. Of special need for cheerleading would be neck braces in case of concussions.
Concussions and head/neck trauma are always a possibility for fliers when they are lifted
overhead during stunting. If the stunt goes awry, the flier could possibly fall from 8 or more feet
in the air to the ground by way of landing on their head or neck. In this case, a neck brace should
be available to keep the cervical spine supported and in a neutral position. In the case of a lower
limb injury where the athlete is ambulatory, a pair of crutches should available as well.
Section 3 For cheer practices, the ground surface type is extremely important. Different
surfaces have various impact absorption capabilities. Because practice facilities can vary, having
access to landing mats, similar to wrestling mats, will instantaneously add a higher level of
absorption to the current practice surface. Without landing mats, the height of stunts should be
limited to protect the safety of fliers. The practice facility should have high ceilings. At a
minimum, ceilings should be 25 feet high so that all stunts and tosses can be performed safely.
