VARK introduction
One of the most revered learning models VARK model. Neil Fleming designed it in 1987
individually as a form of inventory that allows learners to know about their learning styles. VARK
is an acronym which means Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinesthetic. The acronym explains
how it aids students to know styles of learning and effective communication. Thus, Fleming
suggests that when an individual comprehends another person style of learning, they will perform
excellently. The VARK model helps in describing the learning style of individuals which is quite
different from other persons. VARK is designed to help people have a full understanding of other
people's learning styles, and it ultimately helps them in studying effectively. VARK's
Questionnaire helps in determining the kind of learning style suitable for a person.
Critical scrutiny of VARK Questionnaire tells people the type of learner they are. Some learners
are multimodal, and they give attention to multimodal materials, and it indicates interest in
changing the style based on motivation and interest. A multimodal learner may learn using
different methods. VARK stated that multimodal learners are not restricted to a method of learning,
but they are flexible at changing styles and acquiring knowledge.
Multimodal learners are of two types; the first are those who can easily utter their mode of learning
styles and their communication choices and also their team of students or people learning or
studying or working with them. They use a specific method of learning based on the events and
situation around. On the other hand; the second type of learners is those that will gather all inputs
and outputs in their model of learning. Occasionally, individual styles differ in learning particular
concepts depending on choices of approach. The learning style an individual adopts is their choice.
Ultimately, nurses are advised to incorporate their teaching methods with the learning styles of
patients.
Out of four strategies of VARK, there are just two that I specifically use to study, read/write and
Kinesthetic. Learning with kinesthetic makes one make use of the olfactory sense ( is a sense of
smell), taste, visual and tactile sense. The application of knowledge to theories alone is preferred
by the kinesthetic learner. The Kinesthetic learner also uses examples that will show real-life
experience in learning. Kinesthetic learning also involves examples and case study to help learners
understand and this is also helpful to them during an examination. These learners dexterous in
using examples to answer questions and another method I adopt is the read and write method,
which involves reading and writing only. People who use this method always love to gather
information into pages which they will end up reading, and they also love to write. The more the
individual read, the more they comprehend in learning.
The VARK strategies are designed to help teachers on the best means to use to teach people and
in a multivarious way. These strategies help teachers and trainees to be able to based on their
knowledge, teach better based on the method that is suitable for students. This model, if well
studied, teachers will know the difficulties students or learners face when learning or studying
(The Journey of Excellence, n.d). The influence of learning styles of individual learners is strong,
and the model they choose will direct them on what they wish to learn and how they wish to relate
to others based on their knowledge. Thus, it is of great importance for trainers or educators to know
learner's style and to make judicious use of this to their advantage.
