1. Define communism.
A form of government control in which property is publically owned and
individuals are paid according to their potential, skills or needs.
2. Why were the US and USSR embroiled in a Cold War?
The US and USSR were embroiled in a Cold War because both parties wanted to
dominate the influence they had over other nations. Americans believed in Capitalism
while the Soviets believed in Communism. Both nations were fighting for decades to
expand these ideologies anywhere they could in the world. Although America and the
Soviet Union never went to war, they aided other countries that were fighting off the
influence of the opposing nation. The Americans believed that individuals should own
their own businesses and be considered rich or poor, and they believed in a Democratic
government. Soviets believed in an Autocratic government,or dictatorship. The Soviets
believed everyone was equal and had no right to private property.
3. What was America's containment policy? Why was it considered the best way to deal with the
communist threat?
America’s containment policy was a collaboration of several strategies that were
created in order to help not only contain but also prevent the spread of communism. This
was known to be a component of the Cold War and was a form of response towards the
Soviet Union attempting to increase the number of communist, spreading to Eastern
Europe, Korea, Vietnam, and China.
4. In what ways did the Truman Doctrine, the establishment of NATO and the Marshall Plan
support America's Cold War agenda?
President Truman's policy was to provide not only economic but also military aid
for those countries that were at danger of communism or totalitarian ideology. The
Marshall Plan supported the American Cold War by providing twelve billion dollars in 1947
to non- Communist European countries throughout the years 1948 and 1952 in order to
restore the economy. Now the NATO helped support the American Cold War due to the
fact that they were created in order to attack those that are attacking them. Those Included
in the alliance were US, Canada, France, Western European countries, and England.
5. Who or what was the "New Scare" or menace in America during the early Cold War era?
During the Cold War we discover the first Red Scare; in a brief description was the
flood of communism, which occurred not long after World War I. As soldiers returned from
war they were struck by a new nation that were suffering economically and socially.
During the Red Scare the United States government decided to take action and deport
those that they believed to be subversive or other revisionist.
6. How did images and popular culture shape Americans' ideas about the Soviet Union and the
atomic bomb? Use the films embedded in the learning module.
Images and popular culture great influenced Americans ideas about the Soviet
Union and the Atomic Bomb. These films illustrated the importance of “Duck and Cover”.
These short films used cartoon characters to appeal to children. They explained that when
an atomic bomb goes off a white flash occurs and how an atomic bomb can destroy
homes, knock signs down and explode windows. These images project the atomic bomb
as a very serious and dangerous attack. The images and popular culture projected the
