The general purpose of the speech: to persuade
The general topic of the speech: We will persuade the audience to take a brief nap each day.
The specific topic of the speech: We will persuade the audience to take a brief nap each day to
receive physical and psychological benefits.
The thesis of the speech: Adults should incorporate a brief daily nap to enhance their physical
energy and alertness, cognitive memory and learning abilities, and mood.
A) Introduction
a. Attention-Getter: *Wakes up from a nap and turns on lights (or opens blinds), yawns
and stretches* Good afternoon, everyone! Ever think that naps were just for little kids
or lazy people? Well, think again! When I was a freshman in high school, I fell asleep
in my science class. I was extremely tired from staying up late the previous night
from doing homework. Unfortunately for me, my teacher at that time was teaching us
about density. While she was going over the PowerPoint, we were responsible for
taking notes for our daily grade. Sadly, the lack of sleep I had from staying up late
had affected my ability to concentrate. The whole lecture I was just wishing to have a
quick twenty-minute nap. Suddenly, I felt my head slowly drifting downwards and
my eyelids getting very heavy… . I definitely didn't mean to fall asleep, but I was just
so exhausted. When suddenly, I heard my teacher scream “Gabi!,” to catch my
attention. The screaming voice of my teacher alarmed me so much that when I woke
up, I ended up farting very loudly - in front of the whole class. I was so humiliated,

in front of my classmates, but that nap was all I needed to enable me to go on with my
day.
b. Audience, have you ever wondered why the night before a big test, or perhaps some
important event, you find yourself tossing and turning? As I’m pretty sure most of
you answered yes, here’s why. In an article written by Abdullah Alotaibi and other
co-authors, they state that loss of sleep is directly related to stress. More, specifically,
they say that, “ Sleep deprivation has a wide range of harmful effects on human
biology and is associated with fatigue, daytime sleepiness, and reduced
neurocognitive performance,” and that, “cognitive performance in students, including
concentration and estimated efforts to complete tasks, is negatively affected by sleep
deprivation.” This is why adding a nap into your daily schedule is so imperative.
Because we don’t get back those lost hours of sleep, naps have become a viable
means of quick sleep that offers many of the same benefits as a full two nights of
sleep (“Naps Boost Learning” 7).
c. Thesis: Adults should incorporate a brief nap every day to enhance their physical
energy and alertness, cognitive memory and learning abilities, and mood.
d. Preview of points:
i. Naps enhance physical energy and alertness.
ii. Naps enhance cognitive memory and learning abilities.
