The bow-tie method is a diagram that healthcare organizations can use to detect weak points or gaps in
how the organization is managing risk. It gives you a visual summary of all the possible incidents that
could happen depending on a specific hazard and it shows what the organization does to control these
incidents and scenarios.
Another effective tool that hospitals use for risk assessments is the “five whys”. The five whys are an
iterative interrogative technique used to explore the cause-and-effect relationships underlying a
particular problem. It’s primary goal is to find the root cause of a problem by repeating the question
“why?”.
In my area I would implement the bow-tie analysis because it’s visual and gives possible scenarios that
could occur versus waiting on a problem to occur and asking why. “The bow-tie analysis helps
healthcare organizations to create - risk based improvement plans to change patient safety for the
better” (Patient Safety BowTies, 2019). One key goal of using the bow-tie analysis is to reduce avoidable
harm and fatalities in healthcare. The boy tie Analysis can be effective when it comes to hazards and
other possible dangers. The bow tie analysis will help structure your reasoning behind the hazards and
help generate new ideas for hazard evaluations. It can also be useful when determining the cause of
patient misidentification and administering the wrong medication to patients.
