Is poverty a cause of poor health in a community, or is poor health a cause of poverty? How would different views
of this question influence public health policy? Explain, and provide specific examples in your response. Respond
to at least two of your classmates’ postings.
When people live in environments without proper sanitation or decent quality food to eat and have poor access to
reliable quality health care and have trouble affording their medicines they can become ill. Many poor people
struggle to afford quality foods and provide their children with proper diets and medical care including
vaccinations and dental care. When the poor cannot eat well their bodies and immune systems become
weakened and they become unable to provide for their families and this devastating cycle can cause a family to
go into a poverty cycle which is devastating and often unable to escape from.
A different view of this question would be that poverty creates illiteracy and people who are unable to read are
not as readily employed and will have a tendency to work at jobs that require less skill and are more dangerous.
These individuals are also less informed about health risks and may not take preventive measures towards their
health.
As risk factors such as tobacco use, poor diets, alcohol abuse and serious injury continue to widen the
health status between the middle class and the poor of America, our government continues to struggle to
intervene and change our health care system to improve the low income health status.
