Corpus of Happiness and trust in McDonald’s commercials
Once a while we all feel lazy to cook a home cooked-meal so we tend to pick our phones
and order some food or we use the drive-through of a fast food restaurant or we even sit in the
restaurant and eat. All this quick and easily prepared foods that are sold in restaurants are what we
all know as Fast-foods. One popular fast food restaurant is McDonald’s which is an American fast-
food founded in 1940 by two brothers in California. McDonald's is the world's largest restaurant
chain by revenue and it is found in 100 countries. Though the restaurant is known for its
hamburgers, fries and cheeseburgers, they also feature foods like milkshakes, salads, wraps,
smoothies and more. The company billboards, signage, sponsors sporting events and more as
means of advertising but their main form of advertisement is television commercials. Over the
years, McDonald’s television commercials have taken different turns and has had different trends
and defining the brand in many ways. This essay will identify the theme or trend of clowns and
kids in the McDonald commercials that signifies happiness also the trend of McDonalds meals
being prepared in commercials which means kids and even the entire family can trust the fast-food
company and how they make their meals that are and this essay will give reasons to why the trends
or themes are essential and meaningful. In-order to get the central focus of the commercials and

preparation of the food in the commercial means not only kids but the entire family can trust
McDonalds.
The corpus of McDonalds commercials has a trend they follow and there are two different
trends observed in the sample commercials picked. The commercials picked were of different
years in-order to make the theme or trend very clear and vivid. Most of the commercials in the
1960s and 70s have the appearance of clowns and kids in them. But McDonalds also repeated the
clown and kids idea or concept in commercials in the 2000s meaning it is not a coincidence but
rather a trend. The other trend realized in the other McDonald’s sample commercials is the fact
that they show some burgers being prepared and at the end of commercial, the prices are viewed.
This trend means trust. The brand or the company wants its viewers and customers to have trust in
them and the way they prepare their meals.
Every trend and theme has a special effect and meaning attached to it to bring more
emphasis or throw more light to the central idea. For the trend with the kids and the clown in the
brand’s commercial, it shows happiness, fun and more. The clown seen in most of the McDonalds
commercials is a mascot of the fast-food company called Ronald Donald. The clown is loved by
kids so often-times, the clown is seen with kids in the commercials of the company. The clowns
in the commercials also tells the viewers that McDonalds is a very fun place to eat at also a place
where kids love and when kids love something, parents are also forced to love it as well. In the
first commercial, Ronald Donald is seen with two children who looked very happy being sent
round in McDonald land where fries, burgers and other McDonalds foods were seen and tasted by
the children. The theme of trust and happiness were in play in this commercial. The children were
happy to see the clown and were also happy exploring McDonald land. The fact that the children
tasted the fries means they trust the brand and their viewers should also trust the brand as well.
