Identify at least two clientele types for a health sciences librarian. Focusing on the roles of a
health sciences librarian or medical librarian, discuss the services that the clients can
expect to receive from the librarian
Medical library is designed to assist physicians, health professionals, students, patients,
consumers, medical researchers, and information specialists in finding health and scientific
information to improve, update, assess, or evaluate health care according to (Roper, Jan 2006).
Medical libraries are typically found in hospitals, medical schools, private industry, and in
medical or health association. Library Services Resources and activities provided by libraries to
address information needs of users. In a medical library a medical librarian or a health science
librarian serves different types of clientels and these includes physicians, health researchers,
students, patients and health professionals. In medical researches and a student majoring into
health science they expect some services to be offered to them by the medical or health science
librarian and these services include the reference services, circulation services, online
information services, information literacy skills only to mention just a few most of the
information shall be discussed below.
The medical researchers and students expect to recieve reference services from the medical
librarian or their health science librarain. Reference services are the services provided by the
reference department in a library that helps library patrons to get access to the information that
they needed, reference department provide user with direction to the library materials according
to ( Kadir, 2010). Clients in a medical institution conducting a medical research or they are
medical students expect to receive reference service from the librarian so that they can be able to
locate the information they need to use in their research orstudies. Hence as a medical librarian
one needs to offer reference service to the users in order for them to locate the information they
need to use in their researches if the client is a medical researcher. According to Bunge & Bope
(2001) a library is a place where there is full information and a lot of information therefore
without reference services the clients will be lost. Therefore one would conclude that the medical
clients or health science clients would expect the reference service from the librarain. Clients
expect to be offered chat refence services, virtual refences and digital reference services, because
the libraries are operating in the world of technology therefore the medical researchers and
students would expect the librarian to offer them that service.

Furthermore the clients expect to receive circulation services from the medical librarian.
Circulation services comprises the activities around the lending of library books and other
material to users of a lending library according to Weingand (1997). Circulation services include
check-in and check-out of libraray materials, library loaning and checking for the damaged
materials. Medical clients expect the libraraian to serve them and make them borrow materials
from the library that they wish to use for their studies and researches that they will be
conducting. therefore the clients expect to receive circulation services from the medical librarian,
they expect to be allowed to borrow the information and materials they need as well as booking
for materials they need to use.
Online information service is another service that medical researchers and medical students
expect from the librarian. Online information services include offering information on the
website, the library will have an institutional repository with databases to enable online access of
information by the users. Therefore in the 21st century medical researchers and medical students
expect that the library is digitised and can give them access to the online information services in
order to solve their problem s in their studies and researches. Hence they expect the librarain to
assist them by providing information on the web and sometimes help them to search and access
information on the institutional repository. according to Markulin () the users can ask for a help
in finding information on their clinical problems. A responsible librarian will analyse the
problem, search information resources and evaluate the evidence online and respond online using
emails. Therefore the medical clients would expect the medical librarian to offer them online
service.
Moreover the clients of a medical librarain or a health sciences librarian expect to recieve
information literacy skills services from the librarian. The teaching of search skills, either in
person or through the development of online modules, the provision of text searches as a direct
service provider or using a combination of search skills and as a provider of the search literature
(Perrier et al., 2014). This service is expected by the clients to receive it from the librarian, when
the medical researchers comes to the library for the first time they need to be orinted and taught
information literacy still on how they can search and what information do they need and the
places where they can find the information. This service is expected by the clients of the medical
