KIRKPATRICK’S TRAINING EVALUATION MODEL 2
Kirkpatrick’s training evaluation model
In 1959 Donald Kirkpatrick developed the first model of assessing training effectiveness,
which was later updated in 1975 and again in 1994. This model has significantly been used to
ensure personnel in an organization have fully trained and performing at their best (Klenke
2018).
The levels:
Reaction- this level entirely focuses on the trainee's feelings towards the training, did
they find it valuable? Was the instructor good? Was the material good presented well? Was the
venue good? According to Kirkpatrick’s training evaluation model, the trainers must determine
the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that are required to bring about the desired behavior (Klenke
2018). They must also present the program in a way that the participants will not only learn but
also react favorably to the program. Post-training questionnaires are used to gather information
and also to watch the trainee's body language to determine the success of this stage.
Learning- before training, it is essential to have a set of objectives that one wishes to
attain at the end of the training, which makes it easier to evaluate the learners' progress in the
knowledge achieved. Skills and attitudes are also considered (Dr. Caruso, 2012).
Behavior- this involves an evaluation of the trainee's response based on the training they
have received. It should be noted that conduct can only change if there are favorable conditions
and that it's not wise to make conclusions on this early one since the change could be gradual.
Results- this analyzes the outcome of the training to see whether they are suitable for
business or the employees. It is challenging in the sense of identifying the results or benefits that
are very closely linked with the training, thus making it hard to come up with an effective way to
measure the outcome. However, this may not be applicable in all cases due to the resource
