At some point in everyone working life, they are going to need to take time away from
work to deal with a serious personal or family health condition, or to bond with a new child,
specifically to bond with a new child. Paid family and medical leave is a program that enables
employees to take time off from work while still being paid for the birth adoption of a child or to
take care of themselves or a loved one that is ill. Amongst policy makers it is heavily debated.
According to center for American Progress, a mere 13 percent of private sector employees are
allotted paid family leave. Many institutions allow leave but though the Family and Medical
Leave Act which is unpaid. As a result families lose near to $20.6 billion in wages every
year(US beaurau of labor statistics,2007).
Paid leave is often portrayed as an issue that matters to working mothers, paid parental
leave is important for fathers as well as it is for mothers. Now more than ever, we are seeing
more men and fathers wanting to and providing more care for their families. Fathers in the US
have significantly increased the amount of time they spend with their children and working
fathers just like working mothers are now likely to say that they find it difficult to manage work
and family responsibilities. Policies that provide support for fathers, allowing them to prioritize
their family responsibilities, at the same time meeting work demands, may more or less increase
the well- being of their families. Paternity leave as well as longer leaves of several weeks or
months, as is with mothers, can promote things such as the parent child bond, improved lives of
children, and even increased gender equity at home and at the workplace. Paid parental leave for
fathers, as well as for mothers, provides a real advantage to working families. Hence, paid
parental leave should be made available to every single employee, whether working in the
private sector or public sector, whether they are mail or female. This policy paper, however, will
emphasize the need for paid paternity leave as a policy.
