Critical Thinker Worksheet
Write a 75- to 125-word response to each of the following prompts:
1. Review the definition of critical thinking on p. 6 of THiNK: Critical Thinking and Logic Skills for Everyday
Life. Respond to the following questions:
What is the role of critical thinking in daily life?
Provide an example of a situation in your own life in which critical thinking could be used
and discuss why critical thinking would be helpful in that situation.
Critical thinking is a way to be open-minded, willing to reconsider beliefs other than your own based
on found evidence, data, and information. When I was in high school, I had a barrier of what I
learned to be egocentric thinking, believing that nothing I was learning in school would apply to the
real world. I learned later in life that I lacked the skill of critical thinking. Critical thinking plays a role
in everyday life as there are many decisions that will have to be made throughout and not knowing
all there is to know about that scenario can either positively or negatively affect ourselves, family,
and the world we live in. Critical thinking also plays a role in every part of your professional life.
rather you are interviewing for a new job, seeking to get that promotion, or managing your own
business. You need to be able to think critically, communicate clearly, and analyze data to solve
problems if you are aiming to get that job, promotion, or to keep effectively keep your business
running. One example in my life in which critical thinking could be used is the current pandemic our
world is undergoing. Critical thinking is not going to make the problem go away but it can help us
understand the causes of the virus and help to suggest ways to cope with the problem and come up
with ways to improve the current situation.
2. Review the barriers to critical thinking discussed on pp. 21-28 of THiNK: Critical Thinking and Logic
Skills for Everyday Life. Respond to the following:
Identify and describe in your own words at least 2 common barriers found in the textbook to
critical thinking.
Provide an example of situations where you have encountered each barrier.
One common barrier identified in the textbook is “resistance”. This barrier affects one’s overall growth
and development as it block any interactions that will challenge their beliefs, instead of letting go of the
fear of being wrong and accepting insight from other sources that may better support their logic for them
to understand their topic clearly. Another common barrier found in the textbook is “stress” which can
alter an individual’s ability to react physically, mentally, or emotionally. The cognitive process of your
brain is affected in the result of stress and limit one’s ability to engage in critical thinking. One situation I
have encountered the barrier of “resistance” is when I was experiencing a really bad stomach cramp
that couldn’t be explained, and not wanting to go to the hospital because I am always afraid of what the
results might reveal. It wasn’t until my friend forced me to go to the hospital to find out that I had
appendicitis and was rushed into surgery in time to save my life. One situation I have encountered the
barrier of “stress” is falling short of my daughter’s daycare tuition for the week and not having any
assistance with helping my daughter to and from school. It wasn’t until I cried and took a few deep
breaths and was able to think of a way to pay my daughter’s tuition so that I was able to get to work.
