Arguments
Review both the pro and con argument articles on facial recognition from the University Library and
then answer the following questions (your response to each question should be 50-100 words long):
1. Identify the author and source (publisher) of the pro facial recognition article (using link provided
above). Do you think this author/source is credible? Why or why not? (Hint: Review the author’s
background, authority, etc.)
I do believe the author James O’Neil to be credible because of his credentials or authority as
the police commissioner of the New York Police Department. The author’s background being
sworn in as a police officer in 1983 and stating what times were like back then when trying to
analyze biological evidence gives us clarity of the issue and then goes to state facts on his
reason that facial recognition software is indeed beneficial along with supporting details.
Another reason I believe this author to be credible is the data that would have been collected
on the author from “The New York Times” before publishing.
2. What is one reason (premise) the author gives for supporting his conclusion that facial recognition
software is beneficial and necessary? What evidence, statistics and/or outside sources does he
provide to support this reason?
One reason (premise) the author gives for supporting his conclusion that the facial recognition
software is beneficial and necessary is the many cases where clear results of the facial
recognition have led to justice. For example, the arrest of a man accused of raping a worker at
a day spa, and another man charged with pushing a subway passenger onto the tracks. There
have also been arrests made in murders, robberies, assaults. Etc.
3. Identify the author and source (publisher) of the con facial recognition article (using link provided
above). Do you think this author/source is credible? Why or why not?
In this article, I do not believe the author to be credible because he is an opinion columnist and
writes based off his personal point of view rather than facts or experience. Another reason I do
not think the author is credible because the reasons given are not supported by evidence
which is a vital factor when making up a credible source or otherwise you just have an
inductive argument.
4. What is one reason (premise) the author gives for supporting his conclusion that facial recognition
software can be detrimental and needs to be put on hold for now? What evidence, statistics
and/or outside sources does he provide to support this reason?
The author gives a premise of the face recognition software giving the police the opportunity to
easily edit input videos suggesting that they can replace facial features with different model
images pulled from google to make it match a standard mug shot photo. The author gives an
