The ve most critical issues facing the healthcare system in the United
States today are:
1. Too many Americans are not insured and simply cannot aord medical
care. I was oered health insurance through my work but could not
aord the monthly premiums and co-pays while still paying my bills.
When I applied for assistance I was told I made too much for medical
assistance. That left my family with no medical insurance, so any visit
was completely out of pocket.
2. There is less access to care for lower income families. Considering my
uninsured situation I rarely saw the doctor for anything. According to our
text “despite higher rates of self-reported fair or poor health and greater
utilization of hospital inpatient services, low-income persons are 50%
more likely to report no physician contacts within the past 2 years than
are persons in high-income households” (Turnock, 2007, p. 37). Could it
be possible that the reason that many of these people report poor health
is because they do not see a doctor for illness or adverse symptoms and
their condition gets steadily worse? Which leads into...
3. More money is spent on treatment services as opposed to prevention
services. Consider the 50% of the aforementioned group, how many
would benet if they were better educated on their current health and
preventative health measures? Preventative services help to control a
potential health hazard before or just after it starts and helps lower
healthcare cost. (Turnock, 2007, p. 40)
4. Population changes are aecting cost of healthcare and necessary
government policy change. A growing number of elderly patients are
receiving long-term medical care for many chronic illnesses and at the
same time there are a majority of voters that are responsible for tipping
the scales in government policy regarding healthcare reform that may not
represent the needs of most Americans. (Turnock, 2007, p. 36)
5. Developing a national healthcare reform plan that accomplishes the
goals of an ecient healthcare system. The American Health Association
(AHA) described the reform needed as one “…that expands [Medical]
