DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY APPLICATION 2
Application of Dialectical Behavior Therapy to the Conceptualize Case Scenario of Matt
The focus of this week has been on the last component of the BETA model, Action-
Focused Treatment Systems. There are several different theories that could be used to focus on
the case study of Matt, a 44-year old man feeling overwhelmed and stuck in his current work
position. The theory that I felt would be best fitting to help Matt overcome these feelings of
unhappiness is the Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
Presenting Concern
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed by Marcia Linehan, as a branch off
of behavior therapy. According to Seligmen and Reichenberg (2014) “The goal of DBT is to
develop dialectical thinking and practice skills that result in emotion regulation, reduce suffering,
and improve relationships”(p.351). DBT focuses on helping patients to understand their
emotions and how to manage what causes them stress in their daily lives. With the help of his
therapist, Matt can figure out solutions to the way he is feeling about his life and find a way to
change the issues so that he feels fulfilled and happy.
Matt has expressed that he is unhappy with how his professional life has developed. He
has been working at the same finance firm since graduating from college, and feels that he is
grossly underappreciated. He frequently stays late and work and almost always ends up going
into the office on the weekends. His bosses, four different bosses to be exact, dangle the idea of a
promotion over his head so that he will continue to perform above and beyond the normal
expectations of his position. Matt’s disdain for his job is not supported by his wife, who says that
he needs to “get over” these feelings and she shuts down his idea of finding a new job at his age.
