ETHNICALLY DIVERSE SURVIVORS OF IPV
2
Advocating for Ethnically Diverse Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a public health issue that affects millions of
Americans each year. IPV is defined as “physical, sexual or psychological harm by a current or
former partner or spouse” (Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2016). Although
IPV affects women and men of all cultures, “white men and women experience less IPV than do
racial and ethnic minorities” (D. Sheperis and C. Sheperis, 2015). There are several different
barriers that affect IPV survivors in racial and ethnic minorities like stigma, cultural differences,
and language barriers. This paper seeks to address how mental health counselors can advocate
for their clients and get them the assistance they seek.
Individual Advocacy
Scenario
Maria, a 24-year-old Hispanic woman, has come to the community-based counseling
agency where you work. Maria shares with you that she is a survivor of Intimate Partner
Violence (IPV) but is hesitant to go further into the details of her relationship with her abuser,
eventually sharing with you that her partner was physically abusive toward her with high
frequency. It becomes evident to you that Maria is experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD) stemming from the abuse. When you mention this to Maria and recommend for her to
continue with counseling to help her find ways of coping with her PTSD, she declines and says
that she feels better and does not need to continue seeking treatment. Maria is Hispanic,
culturally there is a stigma around receiving any kind of mental health services and that her
relationship issues should stay private.
