AGAINST SCHOOL BY JOHN TAYLOR GATTO
ENGAGING THE TEXT
1) Gatto feels school is boring and childish because it is too structured and doesn’t allow
the students or the teachers to express themselves through “nontraditional” means of
teaching. The modern schooling system was created to mimic the Prussian thought and
culture of; “make good people”, “make good citizens”, “make each person his or her
personal best”. All this has created mediocre intellects which makes the populace
manageable.
2) Gatto quotes Alexander Inglis’s book, principles of secondary education, six basic
functions of “the actual purpose of modern schooling”, as:
1. The adjustive or adaptive function.
2. The integrating function.
3. The diagnostic and directive function.
4. The differentiating function.
5. The selective function.
6. The propaedeutic function.
3) I personally agree to a certain extent that schooling is not necessary and many children
and students in general can benefit from homeschooling. Ben Franklin, and David
Farragut; all of whom were self-taught. I personally believe one should expand on what
they feel is their true calling and not be held back by unmanageable and ordinary
education system.
However, I personally feel it is necessary to learn the basics of mathematics, literature,
humanities, and sociology because it gives students an opportunity to develop interest
areas to pursue later on and build social relationships with others. I also believe, there
should be more options in subjects to choose from in order to incorporate all the different
leaning styles. From personal experience there were many useless classes I took in high
