IMPORTANCE OF UNBIASED SURVEY STATEMENTS 2
Importance of Unbiased Statements
1. According to your assessment, should people be given the right to take cocaine?
2. Since cocaine is extremely addictive and has deadly side effects such as heart attack and
stroke, do you agree that it should remain illegal to keep the greater part of the population
safe?
Importance of creating unbiased sample and survey question:
Population samples and survey questions are an important part of a survey. The function
of a survey is to estimate or determine the truth behind a specific hypothesis such as, “exposing a
plant to long durations of sunlight will help it grow faster.” It is, however, important that the
surveyor designs a study using an unbiased sample as well as survey questions. Accuracy is
required when a survey is being conducted (Yoshino, 1992).
Making use of an unbiased sample is the first step of ensuring that the study is accurate.
To ensure this, a researcher may opt for random ways of selecting the study sample to ensure that
the obtained data is as unique as possible yet related. For instance, when researching the effects
of a specific pest on crops, the researcher may select farms from different regions that have been
affected rather than farms that are immediate neighbors.
In the questions, making use of unbiased questions gives the respondent ample room for
them to express their ideas which is something that would be missing if biased statements are
used (Yoshino, 1992). The biased questions often direct the respondent towards a certain
direction thus they have minimal allowance to convey their feelings thus making the survey
ineffective. The main purpose of a survey is to be able to provoke as much honesty from the
respondent thus unbiased questions would be highly recommended.
