If you were alive in the 1600s as a migrant, what would be the greater appeal of the
American colonies: freedom of religion or economic opportunity? Why
If I happened to be alive in the 1600s as a migrant, the greater appeal of the American
colonies, for me, would have been both freedom of religion and economic opportunity. Why
exactly would I choose both you might ask? First let’s talk about religion, at that time
religion was a the basic essential in daily life of most new citizens. The Pilgrims and
Puritans for example were a small and conservative religious group and in the 1500’s, they
came ashore in America what we call the New England states. They had come to explore
and to live on land that was their own and to practice their religion freely by breaking away
from England and from the Roman Catholic Church and not to be judged or prosecuted for
their beliefs, unfortunately most were of a lower class so they look at the new world as an
open opportunity to prosper to a better status, which leads me into economical
opportunity.
The reason I would also pick economical opportunity is because when the groups that had
the money or power had major impacts on how and why things should be, as well has the
influence to have things changed in their favors. So in that time the desire to improve my
social status would have appealed to me greatly, because with the higher social status I would
get respect and opportunities. In addition, if I had the knowledge I know now I would have
worked to place myself towards the top with things of need at that time like saw mills for
processing lumber for building, purchasing of land for farming and resealing for future profit
as well as the factories or industrial business to process the agriculture.
The region and economic status I believe would have gone hand-in-hand because it would
put me into a possible position to be in the area of the political arena to help forge and
prosper in the new world and to place my status in the upper area of the community, for
people would have respect of me because of me being a strong business and religious man.
No matter what anyone will say it is our human nature, to look at these key things and
desire’s of fellow humans and ourselves to be successful personally and socially, but most
people in society are weary of those without strong ties to religion and during those times it
was a known fact that to be successful and prosper you needed the graces of the church to
grow and succeed.
