RESEARCH DESIGN Easley 2
Research Design
Research design is a combination of the requirements for the collection and analysis of
data necessary to achieve the objectives of the study. It is a series of steps that serve as a guide
for the researcher (Thompson & Panacek, 2006). The research design used in criminological
research will certainly impact the results and deductions drawn, which might then be used to
outline the direction of future rules and interventions within the domain of criminal justice. This
paper will focus on the types, function, strengths, limitations of research design, internal and
external variable-related validity factors, plus the contemporary examples. Fundamentally, all
research design has two main functions;
To create an operational strategy to carry out several steps of the research
To guarantee legitimacy, reliability, and validity in every step of the research
Types of Research
The method to be used is determined by the nature of the phenomenon and purpose of the
research. The chosen method will impact the results and the method by which the outcomes are
concluded (Thompson & Panacek, 2006). There are two key types of research design:
quantitative and qualitative.
Qualitative Research Design
